Did you know that today's standard hit counters and visit tracking systems cannot accurately tell you how many real people are visiting your web site on any given day?

Those huge numbers you see on your current analysis reports, often reaching into the thousands, may be totally inaccurate. Here's what no Application Service Provider (ASP) wants you to know:

When you type a web address into your browser, such as Internet Explorer, your computer is actually making a request for a web page on a web server located somewhere around the world. When the web server receives your request, the server automatically records that request into a log file for later analysis. This happens each and every time you or anyone else pulls up a web page. If you request that same web page again, you are counted as another hit. In fact, if other elements exist on a web page such as pictures and graphics, each one of those elements is counted as a hit also. As you can see, this problem quickly compounds itself.

Now you know what a hit really is. Visits, on the other hand, are the web server's attempt to log unique visitors to the web site. The server does this by obtaining your IP address. Your IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a unique string of numbers assigned to your computer by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) every time you dial into your ISP. The web server records your IP Address into its log files. It then groups together all like IP addresses and counts that group as one unique visit. Sounds good, so far, but here's the problem. Every time you or anyone else dials into their ISP, you are assigned a new IP Address. The process then repeats itself and counts you as a new unique visitor. This problem multiplies by everyone who visits any given web site especially if that web site is visited more than once by the same person during different dial-up sessions.

As a matter of fact, there's more. There is quite a bit of traffic on the information superhighway at any given second. A good percentage of this traffic is produced by web-robots (bots), spiders, 'etts, web crawlers, viruses, etc. These are all scripts that people have written that race around the Internet hitting various web pages and collecting information. Some of these scripts are used by search engines to index their databases. Others are used for who knows what. The problem is that these bots access web pages, thus being counted as hits. This problem also multiplies and adds innumerable hits to server logs.

It all boils down to money. If your ASP can show you that your web site is receiving thousands of "hits" on a daily basis, then your ASP is doing a great job and everyone's happy. In reality, if you spend your advertising and marketing dollars based on the numbers you receive from your current ASP analysis tools, then your hard-earned advertising dollars are being inaccurately directed.

The goal of MediaStreamXL is to give you the most accurate numbers possible. The only way to do that is to disregard web server logs all together. MediaStreamXL uses proprietary techniques to give you accurate numbers, accurate real visitors and the ability to accurately measure the effectiveness of your advertising mediums, from print to radio to television. All of your advertising mediums are measured in real time and presented to you in easy to read charts and diagrams at any time from anywhere in the world.
